Back To Fitness: Fight The Post-Holiday Slump

BY The Blog Team

We love summer holidays – when, after juicing throughout spring, we get to throw our diet plans out the window and give our hard-working minds and bodies a well-deserved break. Yet, while holidays are definitely food for the soul, they can also take a toll on your body (think: cocktails every night, swapping the treadmill for a sun bed…) Sure – it sounds like heaven, but upon coming back from your holiday, reality hits hard, and letting go of some of the “bad” habits you re-adopted can be tough. Luckily, we’re here to help! Here are 7 ways to fight the post-holiday slump!

Get Your Beauty Sleep

Whether you were out partying in a different time zone or napping entire afternoons on the beach, your sleep pattern will surely have been disrupted while you were away. So, the first step is to re-regulate your sleep cycle. Forget naps, or if you can’t, keep them to under 30 minutes, so that you can easily fall asleep come nightfall. A sleep-deprived mind will only worsen your post-holiday blues, and no one wants to be caught  crying at their desk!

Time To Re-Hydrate

Between too much food and alcohol, we’re pretty sure you landed back home feeling dehydrated. To overcome this, drink plenty of water (read: no fizzy drinks, fruit juices or other such drinks). This will help you flush out toxins and fight the post-holiday bloat. Win-win!

Swap Cocktails For Carrots

It goes without saying that continuing to eat as much food as you did during your holidays might not be a good idea for your waistline. In order to reset your metabolism, try avoiding solid food for 12 hours. Drink smoothies or vegetable juices instead to keep your energy levels up. Carrot juice, anyone?

Boost Your Fibre Intake

Once you’ve juiced for 12 hours, opt for healthy foods that are high in fibre, such as whole grains, beans, fruit and vegetables. The extra fibre will help you regulate your metabolism and cleanse your system. Another important thing to keep in mind is to stick to mealtimes, in order to reprogramme your hunger levels. Avoid red meat or especially dense foods. Bye-bye pizza, hello porridge!

Stretch It Out

If you’ve been surfing the waves, indulging in some daily paddle yoga or just keeping up with your usual exercise routine, congratulations! However, if you’re like us, you probably haven’t maintained your regular workout schedule during your holiday. It’s amazing how quickly flexibility tends to disappear. So, pick your routine back up slowly. Start with regular stretching or some lght yoga to avoid injury. Cut your routine in half the first day and then add a little more each day.

Get Zen

Stress is not your friend. It not only increases the effect of post-holiday depression, but also pushes us to continue over- eating and drinking out of anxiety. Return to work with a zen state of mind by meditating on a daily basis. Just 15 minutes per day can drastically improve your mood. Don’t believe us? Try it for yourself!

Mind Your Step

Don’t step on the scale! Hold off on weighing yourself until you feel you’re back to normal. if you find that you’ve gained weight, it’s ok. Shed the extra kilos off slowly and healthily, so you don’t drive yourself mad!
