Ah, summer. Sun-kissed skin, beachy hair, Vitamin D, BBQs and seaside holidays… What’s not to love? Unfortunately, summer isn’t the best time for your skin. While the winter cold tends to leave our skin feeling tired and dry, the summer sun’s UV rays can also cause similar damage. Here are our top tips to rock that healthy ‘summer glow’ all season long.
Tip #1: Stay Hydrated
No matter the season, staying hydrated is the #1 skin tip. However, in the hot summer months, it’s especially important to remember your H2O, as you’re sweating much more. Sip regularly on water and herbal tea, and eat food with a high water content, such as watermelon, cucumber, strawberries and leafy greens. Stuck in the office most of the day? Keep a reusable water bottle on your desk at all times, as it’s easy to forget to drink when you’re busy working. You can even decorate your water with some chopped grapefruit or fresh mint leaves for an even more refreshing summer drink.
Tip #2: Don’t hold back on SPF
Contrary to what you may believe, bikinis provide no protection against the sun and those areas are very sensitive to sunburns. For ultimate protection, before hitting the beach, apply sunscreen all over your body in the nude, and let it dry before you put your bikini on. Rule of thumb: never leave the house without sunscreen!
Tip #3: Sip a glass of red
While a glass of white wine or rose may be your traditional summer go-to, red wine has a healing power that makes it the best sunny afternoon drink. And that’s all thanks to resveratol – a naturally occuring phenol in red grapes – which has an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect. It can help decrease redness from acute sunburns – now, this is something we can get on board with!
Tip #4: When it comes to hats: the wider, the better
When it comes to choosing a hat for those park picnics or beach days, opt for a wide brim. A baseballl cap won’t fully protect your face when the sun is coming from an angle.
Tip #5: Exfoliate, moisturise, exfoliate
The key to getting and maintaining that summer glow is to exfoliate on a regular basis. The most effective way to do this is to use a scrub on dry skin before showering, paying special attention to the knees and elbows. You’re also going to want to moisturise on a daily basis. For best results, finish your exfoliation off with a rich body lotion or oil. Dry skin means losing your tan, and no body wants that!
Tip #6: Feed your face
The best way to brighten your skin and sun spots over time might already been in your fridge! Strawberries are rich in Vitamin C and can work miracles when it comes to boosting your skin’s appearance. For best results, cut a large strawberry in half, poke at it with a fork to release the juices, and swipe it across your face in small circles. Easy and effective!
Tip #7: Say goodbye to hot showers
Unsurprisingly, hot showers further dry your skin after it has been exposed to the sun. Taking a cold shower after sweating will help clear up your skin, decreasing the chance of an acne breakout. So, turn down the temperature!
Tip #8: Treat your legs
Want superb summer legs? We do! The trick to getting that sleek feel and appearance is to alter the way the light reflects off the skin of your legs. First, exfoliate your legs with a commercial or homemade scrub, or use a Clarisonic Brush. Then, apply a rich body butter. For the finishing touch, apply a shimmery body mist.
