Dance has been a huge part of my life since I was a child. My mum enrolled me in ballet class at three years old, and I stuck with it until I was eleven or so.
I love to dance, but ballet was just so structured. I remember, as a little girl, I would hear big booming bass sounds coming from the next studio and I’d get so excited because after class, I was allowed to watch the older girls dance to hip hop. Lucky for me, after years of begging my mum, she finally signed me up for my own hip hop class and I immediately fell in love. It was totally euphoric; hot, punchy, grounded, and so completely different from what I had been doing. From there, I transitioned into lyrical, jazz, and more contemporary jazz, which was my earnest, emotional, true connection to dance. Because I had the foundation, strength, and discipline of ballet, I was able to feel freedom in my body for lyrical jazz and hip hop.
The truth is, when you get the dance bug, it becomes an addiction. If you’re not moving or dancing, you feel like something’s missing in your life. And unfortunately as I got older and started working as an actress, I really lost sight of it for a few years. One day, I woke up one morning and realised, “I need to go to a dance class.” After class, I remember this insanely emotional wave come over me because I hadn’t connected with that side of myself for so long. I think anyone who really enjoys dance or movement would understand what I am talking about – you just have to dance! It’s the overwhelming feeling of spirit and joy when you’re just able to let yourself go and, truthfully, absolutely nothing beats it for me.
